The White Knoll Cross Country teams competed at the Region 5-5A Championship Meet last Wednesday with over 2/3 of the team turning in their fastest time of the season, including an incredible 18 personal bests. Despite being predicted to finish fifth in the Region by a 40 point margin, both the Boys’ and Girls’ teams had no trouble exceeding those expectations. The Girls finished fourth in the Region, and the Boys were only 20 points out of fourth. Additionally, the JV Boys were fourth in the JV race.
Individually, Alaina Monaco’s 21:17 put her in ninth place overall as she earned All-Region honors. Narrowly missing All-Region was Kara Johnsen, who finished in 15th place with a 21:50. In the JV race, Caroline Byler was tops for WK.
Nathaniel Wilburn ran his season’s best of 18:08 to finish 20th in the Varsity Boys’ race, 20 seconds ahead of teammate Caleb Shealy. Drake Moorer led the Timberwolves in the JV contest.
Among the many personal best performances, two in particular stood out. CSMS eighth grader Caroline Byler beat her previous best mark by two minutes and 22 seconds, running 25:20. Another second year runner, sophomore Preston Johnson, ran 20: 57 to beat his previous best by one minute and 31 seconds. Byler and Johnson were chosen by the coaching staff as the Run Hard “Runners of the Meet” for the Region meet.
